Mr W Bush
Headteacher
Wesley Bush is an experienced and highly respected educational leader who has dedicated his career to improving outcomes for young people across West Yorkshire. As Headteacher of Castleford Academy, he brings a strong track record of school improvement, strategic leadership, and a deep commitment to raising aspirations for every pupil.
Throughout his career, Wesley has led on transformational improvement work across a number of schools in the region, helping to strengthen teaching quality, enhance pastoral systems, and build cultures where both staff and pupils can thrive. His leadership is characterised by clarity of vision, high expectations, and a belief in the power of collaboration to drive meaningful change.
Wesley has also served as Chair of the Wakefield Secondary Headteachers group, a role that reflects both his professional standing and his commitment to working collectively for the benefit of all young people in the district. In this position, he championed stronger partnerships between schools, shared best practice, and encouraged a united approach to tackling the challenges facing education locally.
At Castleford Academy, Wesley continues to demonstrate his unwavering dedication to improving the life chances of the pupils he serves. His leadership is rooted in the belief that every child deserves an excellent education, and he works tirelessly to ensure that the academy provides the opportunities, support, and ambition needed to help pupils succeed.

Mr R Guest
Deputy Headteacher
Richard has worked in education since 2004, beginning his career in a Pupil Referral Unit supporting permanently excluded pupils. Driven by a desire to improve the life chances of young people, he developed extensive experience working with vulnerable learners, helping them overcome barriers to success.
Richard qualified as a Geography teacher in 2007 and has always been passionate about broadening pupils’ horizons through learning both inside and outside the classroom. Throughout his teaching career, he has organised and led a range of educational visits across the UK, including field trips to North Wales, providing pupils with opportunities to explore and understand the wider world.
In September 2013, Richard joined Castleford Academy as Assistant Headteacher for Teaching and Learning. In this role, he was responsible for driving improvements in teaching and learning across the academy, ensuring that pupils received the highest quality education and were equipped with the knowledge, skills and experiences needed to succeed beyond school.
Richard was promoted to Deputy Headteacher in 2021 with responsibility for Performance and Quality. His areas of expertise include middle leader effectiveness, performance management and the development of teaching and learning. He leads a team of Lead Practitioners who work across the academy to research, develop and embed the latest evidence-informed teaching strategies, supporting staff development and helping to ensure consistently high standards of classroom practice.
In addition to his leadership responsibilities, Richard has presented at regional teaching and learning conferences, sharing best practice and evidence-informed approaches to improving classroom teaching. He has also worked in school-to-school support, collaborating with colleagues across a range of settings to develop teaching practice, strengthen leadership and help improve outcomes for young people.
Through his leadership, Richard works closely with colleagues to raise standards, improve outcomes and secure the best possible educational experience for all pupils. He remains committed to providing young people with the opportunities, knowledge and skills they need to be successful in their future education, employment and life beyond the academy

Mrs A Wright
Deputy Headteacher
Abigail got into teaching after taking a sabbatical to look after her father who was unwell and lived in Guadeloupe at the time. While away with her sister, who was revising for her A level exams Abigail spends time supporting her and discovered her passion for teaching. On returning to England, she switched from a pure chemistry degree to one that provided QTS to enable her to become a teacher.
Her role in school is very varied and no one day is the same! She leads on the day-to-day running, organisation and communication in school; this involves arranging the school calendar, the planning of cover to ensuring staff are available for lessons and duties and communication of trips and events. She works closely with the HR team and other colleagues, to make sure that things run smoothly. She is the strategic lead for inclusion across the academy; line managing the SEND team and overseeing policy. She works closely with the SLT responsible for timetable, curriculum and the designated teacher for our looked after pupils. She also line manages the subject leaders for history, RE and Life & Society. She is in charge of the subject leader meetings that occur over the year and in streamlining communications to support wellbeing and workload. With pupils she is probably best known for her work in maintaining the Academy's high standard and expectations around uniform and behaviour. Her favourite role is still being the teacher she set out to be in the science department.
In an everchanging world, she believes that the best way we help pupils is by preparing them for their next steps, enabling them to become informed and confident citizens and providing opportunities that facilitate future success and independence.

Mr R Lloyd
Assistant Headteacher
Ryan developed a passion for sport and physical activity from an early age, which inspired him to pursue a career in education. He trained at Leeds Metropolitan University, graduating in 2009 with a Degree in Secondary Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Ryan began his teaching career at Castleford Academy in September 2009 as a Newly Qualified Teacher of Physical Education. From the outset, he demonstrated a commitment to providing exceptional opportunities for young people both inside and outside the classroom. Recognising the importance of extra-curricular sport in developing confidence, resilience and aspiration, Ryan established himself as a dedicated leader of school sport, organising numerous domestic and international educational visits to broaden pupils' experiences.
In 2012, Ryan was appointed as Second in the Physical Education Department, where he played a pivotal role in driving standards of teaching, learning and sporting excellence. He successfully led the school's Rugby League programme, coaching both boys' and girls' teams to national success. One of his proudest achievements came in 2014 when he coached Castleford Academy's first-ever team to victory at Wembley Stadium. During this period, Castleford Academy was recognised nationally as Rugby League School of the Year on two occasions, reflecting the strength of the programme and the opportunities provided for pupils.
Ryan was appointed Head of Physical Education in 2018, leading a high-performing department renowned for its ambition, collaboration and consistently excellent outcomes. Through inspirational leadership and an unwavering commitment to high standards and expectations, he worked tirelessly to ensure every pupil was supported to achieve their full potential. Under his leadership, the department consistently secured outstanding GCSE Physical Education and BTEC Sport Level 2 and Level 3 results, while continuing to provide an extensive extra-curricular programme that engaged pupils of all abilities.
In January 2023, Ryan joined the school's senior leadership team as Associate Senior Leader, taking responsibility for the school's careers programme and pupil leadership. In this role, he developed opportunities that empowered pupils to become confident, ambitious and well-prepared for their future pathways.
Ryan was appointed Assistant Headteacher in January 2024, with responsibility for Behaviour and Attendance, where he leads the pastoral team in ensuring the highest standards of behaviour and attendance across the school. As a Designated Safeguarding Lead, he is committed to ensuring that every pupil feels safe, supported and able to thrive. Ryan believes that every young person deserves the opportunity to fulfil their potential and is passionate about creating a culture built on high expectations, positive relationships and inclusion. He has also developed and embedded the school's whole-school rewards strategy, introducing a range of successful initiatives and events that celebrate achievement, recognise positive contributions and inspire pupils to strive for excellence every day.
Ryan is proud to be part of a leadership team that places pupils at the centre of every decision. He is passionate about fostering a culture of ambition, respect and opportunity, ensuring that every young person leaves Castleford Academy equipped with the knowledge, skills and character to succeed in the next stage of their education and beyond.

Mrs S Salmon
Assistant Headteacher
Sarah knew from a young age that she wanted to become a teacher. Driven by a passion for education and helping young people achieve their potential, she began her career as an English teacher at Castleford Academy, progressing to the role of Second in Department before moving into pastoral leadership as a Year Leader.
Throughout her career, Sarah has remained committed to supporting young people both academically and personally. Her experiences in teaching and pastoral leadership provided the foundation for her progression into senior leadership, and today she serves as an Assistant Headteacher and Trust Strategic Safeguarding Lead.
Having spent her entire career at Castleford Academy, Sarah is incredibly proud of the school and the community it serves. She firmly believes there is something truly special about the academy, its pupils and its staff, describing it as an exceptional place to work and grow professionally.
In her current role, Sarah supports the day-to-day running of the academy, with particular responsibility for safeguarding. She is passionate about ensuring that every pupil feels safe, happy and supported, both in school and at home. Working closely with external agencies and professionals, she helps ensure that barriers to learning are removed and that all young people have access to the support they need to succeed. Sarah firmly believes that children cannot learn effectively unless they feel safe and secure, and this principle underpins all aspects of her work.
As Trust Strategic Safeguarding Lead, Sarah also works across both primary and secondary schools within the trust. This wider responsibility has given her the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across a range of settings and to further strengthen safeguarding practices and support for young people across the trust. Through this work, she has developed a deep appreciation for the commitment, expertise and dedication of staff who work tirelessly to improve young people's lives.
Sarah feels privileged to work alongside such talented and passionate colleagues and considers it a privilege to support young people in becoming the best versions of themselves. She remains dedicated to helping pupils overcome challenges, achieve their goals and develop the confidence, resilience and character needed for future success.

Mrs K Chippendale
Assistant Headteacher
Kathryn is a valued member of the Senior Leadership Team who is committed to ensuring that every pupil is supported to achieve their full potential, both academically and personally. Throughout her career, she has been passionate about creating opportunities for young people to succeed, helping them develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to thrive in education and beyond.
In her role, Kathryn works closely with pupils, staff and families to promote high standards, foster positive relationships and ensure that every young person receives the support and encouragement they need to succeed. She believes that a strong school culture, built on mutual respect, ambition and inclusivity, provides the foundation for outstanding outcomes and personal growth.
Kathryn is dedicated to creating a learning environment where pupils feel safe, valued and inspired to achieve their best. She is passionate about ensuring that all pupils, regardless of their background or starting point, have access to the opportunities and guidance needed to realise their aspirations and develop into confident, responsible citizens.
Working collaboratively with colleagues across the academy, Kathryn plays an important role in driving continuous improvement and maintaining the highest standards in all aspects of school life. Mr L Holmes
Assistant Headteacher
Lee Holmes is a proud former pupil of Castleford Academy, then known as Castleford High School, before continuing his studies at New College Pontefract and completing a BA Physical Education with QTS at the University of Leeds.
After graduating, Lee returned to his hometown and joined Castleford Academy in 2006 as a Teacher of Physical Education. Throughout his career, he has remained passionate about providing young people with the opportunities and education needed to succeed, regardless of their background.
Lee developed as a middle leader through his role as Head of PE, leading the department for eight years and promoting high standards, participation and achievement. Since 2018, he has held responsibility for Key Stage 4 outcomes, working to ensure pupils achieve the qualifications and skills needed to progress successfully into post-16 education, training or employment.
As someone born and raised in Castleford, Lee is deeply committed to raising the aspirations of the town's young people. He believes that every pupil deserves the opportunity to thrive, develop resilience and leave the academy prepared for life beyond education. His vision is to ensure pupils have genuine choice in their future pathways, enabling them to pursue careers and opportunities they are passionate about, ultimately leading to successful and fulfilling lives.
Lee is proud to serve the community that shaped him and remains dedicated to helping young people become confident, responsible citizens who contribute positively to society and the local community.

Mrs A Wainwright
Associate Assistant Headteacher
Alison is a dedicated member of the Senior Leadership Team and an experienced Teacher of History who is passionate about helping young people achieve their full potential, both academically and personally. Throughout her career, she has remained committed to ensuring that every pupil is supported, challenged and encouraged to become the very best version of themselves.
As Deputy Safeguarding Lead, Alison plays a key role in promoting the wellbeing, safety and personal development of pupils across the academy. She is passionate about nurturing confident, resilient and compassionate young people who are well prepared to thrive in an ever-changing world. Her work is underpinned by a strong belief that pupils achieve their best when they feel safe, valued and supported.
At the heart of Alison's approach is a commitment to exceptional pastoral care. She places great importance on building positive relationships with pupils, families and colleagues, creating an environment where every young person feels listened to, respected and able to succeed. Through these strong relationships, she works to ensure that pupils have the confidence to overcome challenges, embrace opportunities and develop the skills they need for future success.
Alongside her pastoral and safeguarding responsibilities, Alison continues to inspire pupils through her teaching of History, encouraging them to develop curiosity, critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the world around them. She believes that education extends far beyond academic achievement and is committed to helping pupils develop the character, resilience and confidence needed to make a positive contribution to society.

Mr C Law
Associate Assistant Headteacher
My journey into education was inspired by a passion for outdoor learning and a lifelong interest in science. Before entering the classroom, I worked as an outdoor education instructor, helping young people develop confidence, resilience and a deeper understanding of the world around them through experiential learning. It was this passion for inspiring and educating young people that led me to pursue a career in teaching.
In my leadership role, I oversee the management and use of school data, ensuring that accurate and meaningful information supports decision-making across the school. My work helps drive improvement, monitor student progress and identify opportunities to enhance outcomes for all learners.
I also lead on the development and management of the school timetable, coordinating complex staffing and pupil schedules to ensure the effective delivery of the curriculum. This responsibility requires a detailed understanding of both educational priorities and operational planning, ensuring that resources are used efficiently while maintaining a high-quality experience for students.
With 34 years of teaching at Castleford Academy I have witnessed many changes to the Academy which have now what is an outstanding educational centre where young people thrive. It has been my privilege to work with dedicated colleagues who ensure that young person has the opportunity and support to achieve their full potential.

Business Manager
Claire joined Castleford Academy as Business Manager in August 2025, bringing with her more than 11 years of experience in financial management and education operations. With a strong commitment to supporting high-quality education, she is dedicated to ensuring that the academy's resources are utilised effectively to create the very best learning environment and outcomes for all pupils.
A highly skilled and knowledgeable leader, Claire holds the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) Level 7 Diploma in School Financial and Operational Leadership, as well as the IOSH Managing Safely qualification. Demonstrating her commitment to continuous professional development, she is currently studying towards the NEBOSH Certificate in Health and Safety.
As Business Manager, Claire leads a wide range of operational functions across the academy. Her responsibilities include the strategic management of finance, health and safety, estates and facilities, administration, catering, compliance and lettings. Through her work, she plays a vital role in ensuring that the academy operates efficiently, remains compliant with statutory requirements and provides a safe, welcoming and well-maintained environment for pupils, staff and visitors.
Claire is passionate about her role and the positive impact that effective business and operational leadership can have on the educational experience of young people. She believes that strong systems, careful financial stewardship and high-quality facilities are essential in enabling staff and pupils to achieve success.
One of the things that stood out to Claire immediately upon joining Castleford Academy was the strong sense of teamwork and community that exists throughout the school. She quickly recognised the positive relationships between staff and pupils, as well as the shared commitment to supporting young people to achieve their full potential.
Claire is proud to be part of the Castleford Academy community and believes there is a genuine sense of belonging that makes the academy a special place to work.
