Castleford Academy’s Design Technology (DT) Department are manufacturing face shields due to the shortages of PPE (personal protective equipment) seen across the country. Whilst the school has remained open for children of key workers, the DT team started to look at how they could join in with other schools across the country who are manufacturing face shields and other types of PPE.
Mr Gardham, DT teacher, who has led the production said “ Having watched the news about the shortage of PPE we felt we had to do something to help support local care homes and hospitals. Having spent an afternoon designing and finalising a design we got to work making the face shields. We soon ran out of materials but more requests came flooding in. We used our twitter @CastlefordDT to ask for support and thankfully local businesses and two parents offered to donate materials and cash towards more stock. This support has allowed us to manufacture over 500 face shields so far which have been distributed to Pontefract Hospice, Pinderfield ICU and 14 care homes. I am really proud of the team and their efforts along with the community spirit of support.”
