Batley Girls' High School is the Lead School in the Yorkshire Rose Teaching Alliance. The Alliance offers high quality teacher training to graduates in a range of subjects. The partners are Whitcliffe Mount Business and Enterprise College, Spen Valley Sports College, Castleford Academy, The Mirfield Free Grammar & Sixth Form, BBG Academy, Batley Business & Enterprise College, Kettlethorpe High School and Warwick Road J & I School, all located within a 30 mile radius of each other within West Yorkshire. We offer the opportunity to work with dedicated professionals who are passionate about providing the best educational experience for future generations of young people. We believe that the School Direct route enables us to select the best candidates and to provide the best support.
All schools in the Alliance pride themselves on 'growing their own' and currently a significant proportion of the workforce trained in their current schools, either through the traditional PGCE route, the Graduate Teacher Training programme or more recently through School Direct. Of these, a sizeable majority are promoted point holders, up to and including at Senior Leadership level.
From 2015 we will be working with Bradford College and Leeds Metropolitan University on this innovative, exciting and high quality approach to Initial Teacher Training. Through it, graduates apply directly to schools to undertake their training as a teacher. This year-long, school based programme is devised and delivered by our Alliance schools and our partner higher education institutions.

We aim to deliver a bespoke training package, which will make the most of your knowledge and skills. You will be placed in two of the Alliance Schools and after a year's successful training, you will achieve a PGCE with QTS. As an Alliance, we are committed to helping you develop professionally, by providing an extensive programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

School Direct exists in two distinct formats. The majority of entrants who have less than 3 years' work experience follow the School Direct (Unsalaried) route. This is the replacement for the previous PGCE route. In this case you would be funded through a student loan in the same way as for your first degree. Your fees would depend on the HEI you select, as with other courses. There are bursaries available for shortage subjects.

If you are a graduate with 3 years' successful experience in the workplace (not necessarily educational) then School Direct (Salaried) could be the training programme for you. We will be offering these places in shortage subjects only (please refer to table below). If you were to be successful in securing a place on this programme you would be employed by the school as an unqualified teacher for the duration of the course; the fees for your training would be met by the Teaching Agency.
Our entry requirements
Our determination is to match the right trainee to the right school; we consider temperamental and attitudinal aspects as even more important than qualifications. You will need to be equally comfortable working in a team or independently, have a high degree of emotional intelligence, the ability to empathise and a genuine understanding of this age group. You will care about equality and diversity, not see these as boxes to tick and be unafraid to use the cliché that you want to make a difference. You will be a highly motivated individual with a real sense of moral purpose and a tireless energy to achieve the best for your students. You will take and deliver criticism constructively and understand the need to balance your home and work life. We are looking for committed, resilient, reflective practitioners, able to learn from their own experiences and the experiences of others. For all subjects you will have at least grade C at GCSE in English and Maths; for some you will also need Science and B grades. Communication skills are paramount. You will need the ability both to write in Standard English and to model accurate and effective spoken language. You will also be fully computer literate.

All trainees must have a 2(ii) or better in an appropriate subject. Since BGHS, The Mirfield Free Grammar and Castleford Academy have flourishing sixth forms, trainees who are placed at any of these institutions should expect to teach up to A level and would thus need significant subject expertise. It is essential that you have some experience of working with young people and an affinity with the 11-18 age range. Through the interview process, we will identify specific trainee teachers for each subject and school; each student teacher will have a 'home' school where they will spend the majority of their time, although they will attend training with student teachers from across the Alliance and undertake an additional placement in other Alliance schools.
For secondary trainees, at least 50% of your degree should be in the subject (or related to the subject) for which you are applying. You will also need to pass a literacy test before you can begin training to show that you can communicate clearly, fluently and accurately in written Standard English.
The selection process will start with the standard UCAS application form, as provided on the UCAS website. Through this, you will demonstrate you meet the academic requirements laid down by the Teaching Agency. We would also expect to see some evidence of why you have decided to pursue a career in teaching – for example, experience of observing in a school or employment within a school setting as a Learning Assistant.
Your choice of referees is important.
Following DfE guidance, applicants will need to have taken skills tests and additional screening assessment provided by Pearson Education. You would be expected to complete the skills tests successfully, typically within 6 weeks of being offered a place, otherwise the offer may be rescinded.
Those candidates who we feel will flourish in our contexts will be invited to undertake a face to face selection process. This will include interviews as well as time spent in school interacting with young people in a classroom situation. You should be able to demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively with adults and children alike, and also be able to show a sound understanding of the subject or age phase you wish to teach. Any offer of a place on our programme is conditional on a satisfactory Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure and a satisfactory Fitness to Teach Declaration.
If successful, for the majority of the school year, you will be based in your 'home' school. You will benefit from some training by staff in that school as well as meeting with and undertaking workshops and other activities with other student teachers from across our Alliance of schools. Our partner HEIs' staff will be delivering significant elements of your training to support the school-led programme since this combined approach has proved very successful. Being linked to a school from early on in the course, you will quickly come to appreciate teaching and learning in the workplace and will see theory put into practice every day. Our training programme will build your confidence and subject knowledge, giving you the necessary skills to become an effective classroom practitioner.
Throughout this time, you will be supported by a well-trained mentor. As your confidence grows, you will deliver parts of lessons on your own, taking on more responsibility until you are teaching full lessons. As part of your further development, you will undertake one other main placement at another school, usually in a different context from your 'home' school. There will also be the opportunity to spend a varying amount of time at other schools to enhance further your learning through experiencing a diverse range of educational settings.

School Direct (Salaried)
Trainees on the School Direct Training Programme (salaried) are not required to pay tuition fees to cover the course. You will be paid at point 1 on the unqualified teacher scale for the duration of your course.
