Musical of 'New Girl' written by our department written about current issues. Deaf pupils included in our performance with the first ever full signed performance at Castleford Academy. Showcase of students work performed at a strong standard in a range of styles. Musical Theatre club established by Grace Tankard in Y11. KS3 Drama club continued with BTEC pupils now running as part of their course. BTEC Miss Saigon trip – 90 pupils over all BTEC groups attended. KS3 Set design competition. Musical Futures Champion School.

25 Y11 students took part in the Pet XI Poetry Workshop30 (2018). Y10 Pupil Premium boys involved in Jamie Peacock motivational workshop (2018). 72 Y7 pupils were taken on a residential trip to Belgium as part of the teaching of Private Peaceful. 70 Y10 and 11 pupils were taken to see A Christmas Carol as part of the GCSE Literature course. 68 Y10 and 11 pupils were taken to see Romeo and Juliet as part of their GCSE Literature course. 48 Y10 and 11 pupils were taken to see Blood Brothers as part of their GCSE Literature course.

Residential trip to Scarborough - Year 10. Year 7 Cross Curricular Day (Africa). Trip to Malham – Y7. School to school support. Training ITT Sept-December.

​​​​​​​​​​History

48 students went to Rome in May 2018. Year 8 trip to the Royal Armouries in Leeds. Year 9 trip to Pontefract Castle to support new GCSE. Two students into schools: One from Leeds University and one from Huddersfield University.

​​​​​​​​​​Literacy

51 Millionaires so far, a new school record. 2018-19 at 22/5/19 Cameron Butters 7CIW has smashed the school record with 8,359,467 words. 2018-19 at 22/5/19 281 million words read, a new school record. Hope to reach 300 million by the end of the school year. During 3 Reading Rewards Assemblies 2017-18 for Years 7-9, we issued £370 of chocolate, £838 in Free Books and a staggering £575 in Book Tokens. Scholastic Book Fair Sales March 2019 of £1428 earnt the school £857 in Free Books. World Book Day was celebrated that week with staff dressed as book characters. Library loans from September 2018 until 22/5/19 are 10,812. There are 13,322 books available to borrow with approximately 950 books out on loan at any given time.

​​​​​​​​​​Maths

18 pupils achieving Gold, Silver or Bronze awards in UKMT 2018 with one pupil progressing to national final. Over £600 raised for local charities by Year 8 in their "Giving Nation" fundraising day. Year 7 & 8 maths team finished 4th at Leeds University Maths Pop Quiz. Nine grade 9's achieved in mathematics during the 2018 cohort.

​​​​​​​​​​Media Department

Pupils have been supporting filming and photography in a number of areas around school, including a number of Music and Drama events. CASmag pupil magazine launched, which will be produced termly. CAStv will follow in September as an extension of CASmag. GCSE Photography to launch in September, extending the courses on offer in the Media Department.

​​​​​​​​​​MFL

77 Year 8 students were taken to Paris. Staff from MFL supported the Belgium Trip, run by the English department.

We are also part of the MFL Wakefield Learning Partnership, attending meetings and hosting.

​​​​​​​​​​Music

Production of "New Girl" Musical – an original production written by our Performing Arts team. "Headliners" KS4 concert. Soul Band and Harmonix performed at the Music For Youth regional festival. The department has a link with Musical Futures - we have been given Champion School status as well as Tech Champion School status. Dynamix & Choir performed at Wakefield Theatre. Took choir to carol sing at a residential home in Castleford - this was a great experience and really brought the community together. Singing continued to be promoted across Key Stage Three. Y11 Student Ethan has entered DJ Performance for AQA GCSE as well as Charlie entering Tech Performances. Musical Futures Champion School.

​​​​​​​​​​Step Up

To date approximately 165 pupils, including pupil premium, LAC and EAL pupils, have received 1-1 mentoring intervention for varying needs. In addition to an ever increasing number of pupils accessing Step Up Resource, averaging termly that 700+ individual pupils access this resource and a total number of visits of approximately 1,500 – 2,000 each term from Academy pupils for a variety of needs i.e. uniform, step up referrals, mentoring, injuries plus many more. Step Up staff also work closely with various outside agencies to help support our pupils and their needs, working towards removing any barriers to learning.

Parents of More Able pupils have received information on how to support their pupils at home. Y11 More Able revision/exam stress workshop/assembly. Staff CPD on Questioning strategies and thinking hard, to stretch the more able. High Flyers Awards celebrating achievement. More Able Wall of Fame on library corridor. More Able My Tutor sessions held to stretch and embed maths concepts for students. Leeds University Law Trip following pathways work. Y11 More Able progress plans, targeting specific students to increase their outcomes. Cambridge Residential Trip experiencing and overnight stay at the University and insight into the daily life. More Able Magistrates Mock Trial visit to Leeds magistrate’s court where students prosecuted and defended in a formal setting. Staff CPD sessions and Middle Leaders training including staff sitting the subject exam paper. Mensa IQ Test for 56 More Able pupils (16 of which got into Mensa and are in the top 2% nationally!). Grade 9 strategy booklet given to students with information of how to gain grade 9’s. Various rewards in assemblies and praise letters home.

Fundraising

This year, we have worked with and fundraised for the following charities donating a considerable amount of money accrued from school functions and events: The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. BBC Children in Need. Castleford Food Bank. WaterAid. Samaritans. Make a Wish Foundation. Star Bereavement Support Service. The Prince of Wales Hospice. Martins House Children’s Hospice. British Heart Foundation. MacMillan Coffee Morning. Food Bank Drive for Castleford Smawthorne Community Church."Odd Sock Day".

Five Towns ITT Partnership created with Leeds Beckett University and PAT schools, Airedale Academy and their pyramid schools, Kettlethorpe, Accord MAT, Crofton, Hemsworth Academy, all CMAT schools. 14 trainees in place. All on track to pass. Currently have 11 trainees for September 2019. New Collaborative Teaching School Alliance have joined the Five Towns Partnership and we will be linked to Huddersfield University to offer 11-18 routes. Continue to work with Sheffield Hallam and Leeds Beckett to offer core training places.

School to School Support

JO & KG have delivered NQT CPD for the LA. SLES transferred to New Collaborative Teaching Schools – more deployments that in previous years. Increased number of SLEs and LLEs. SLE training to be delivered by Castleford staff in June. NQT learning walk for LA. We have been asked to continue to run the NQT provision for next year.

Castleford Academy CPD

An updated directory for CPD was issued in September. In addition to a number of core CPD opportunities, staff also choose options from a range of CPD. The directory was devised following a Training Needs Analysis completed by teaching staff. New research focused CPD sessions were developed: The Power of Language.

NQTS do not follow the PM cycle but have six official observations and three form reports each year. They are all on track for successful completion of their NQT Induction.
